RAM 1GB 400MHz DDR Non-ECC CL3 PC3200 Memory

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 and it had (dare I admit it?) only 256 MB of RAM. When I bought it a couple of years ago, the speed seemed great; but it began to seem sluggish compared to my "work" computers. When I realized how little RAM I had, I went looking for a RAM upgrade. By using a large commercial search engine whose name begins with "G," I found out what types would fit my computer with 2 clicks (including the one on "G" telling it to "go.")

I had never done anything "under the hood" of a computer before (even though I am an engineer -- mechanical type!). Putting in the memory board was a snap. When I plugged the computer back in and started it up, no action was required -- it just recognized and began using the additional RAM. The difference in speed was immediate and dramatic. Programs run much faster, it's very noticeable.

No problem with shipping. Shipped from Amazon, came quickly, no damage.

I couldn't be happier with this product.

Microsoft LifeCam NX-6000 Webcam

I needed to buy a webcam to do videoconferencing with relatives in Italy. I decided to buy a Microsoft product because I could be sure it would be the most conventional, mainstream webcam available. I decided to get this model because it appears to be the top-of-the-line for Microsoft, with a 2 Megapixel video resolution (as well as a 7+ Megapixel still camera built-in).

This particular model is designed to attach to the top of a laptop. It does not fit securely on the top of a flat panel display, but with a little tape it is quite usable. I am very impressed by the quality of the picture, and the ease of use of the hardware and software. What most impressed me however was the noise cancellation done by the software, so that the camera's microphone does not create feedback from the PC's speakers (something that telephones do that most of us just take for granted).

It worked like a charm for our internet videoconference with my in-laws in Italy. Really great. I have already ordered a second one to give as a gift.

Note: this model is really designed to use with a laptop. I had to use tape to attach it to the top of my flat panel display and I had to use a USB extension cord to reach the PC under my desk.

MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION

Maxim aims itself straight at what the straight male psyche likes: laughter, girls, and bizarre subjects (such as "How to Survive Torture", a topic in the September 2001 issue).

... this magazine is not just about sex and bad taste. It celebrates male life, and it does this without apology. Men have apologized far too much; the people who seem to think maleness needs to be "fixed" are maladjusted [people] who would never cut men any slack anyway, no matter how "sensitive" or politically correct men pretend to be, so men might as well party. Maxim is the technical journal of this attitude!

Maxim and some other men's magazines (like Men's Health) have discovered a formula that works to keep men reading: To-the-point articles thoroughly interleaved with humor and banter; lots of photographs and descriptive drawings; and topics ranging from sex and seduction to war and first aid. Lots of practical information and lots of truly excellent photos of sexy women that are not raunchy.

If I could only read one men's magazine, this would be it.

DCC-1200 12-Cup Brew Central Coffeemaker

Two weeks ago, I needed a new coffee maker. The Krups Aroma Control maker is in all the stores and catalogs, so I bought one in the local mall BEFORE reading the Amazon reviews. BIG MISTAKE. Lesson learned - read the reviews - many negative comments. I used it for 3 days, and readily understood the description (...) of "eye candy" (looks nice, but seems like cheap plastic) and weak coffee (what they describe as a feature - allowing the coffee to steep - is really a euphemism for a poorly designed system that is guaranteed to give you a weak cup of coffee). One redeeming feature - the carafe is very nice.
Within 2 days of having the Krups, i was on Amazon looking for a replacement coffee maker (a good cup of coffee is critical in the morning!). I went out on the risk curve and ordered the new Cuisinart - no reviews yet. The Cuisinart has a more classic brewing system (water goes through grinds via gravity), yields a delicious cup of HOT coffee, has a variable temperature hot place, and looks and feels solid. We happen to have stainless steel appliances (refrigerator, freezer, stove), and it matches beautifully. Best news - excellent coffee!. I would highly recommend the Cuisinart.

SteamVac with Clean Surge

The F5914 really cleans carpets well. On my worst carpet area, the cleaner did as well as a commercial carpet cleaner. I recommend the following to make it a successful cleaning:
1) I supplement the hot water with some boiling water to really get the temperature up. By the time the water hits the spray nozzle, it has really cooled off so make it hotter. Bissell uses a heater, but it can't be that powerful without reducing motor power. Best to supplement.
2) Patience. Go slow and go over really bad areas. You will HAVE to pretreat and hand wash heavy stains, but so do the pros. Don't expect a diamond out of coal. You still have to do the work.
3) Clean often. I have one carpet that I waited way too long and it just won't come clean. The pros can't and I can't. BIG lesson learned there.

Have fun with this. I can't believe how much dirt there was in my "clean" areas, so it will be great to have this around to clean when I desire to. I saved more than the price of the cleaner this weekend.

Cup-Capacity K-Cup Spinning Carousel

This is very nicely built and a good size for the counter top. I was expecting it to be larger, but it is just the right size to sit next to your coffee maker. Much better looking than having stacks of keurig coffee containers sitting around the counter!! My only wish is that it had 4 rows of containers instead of 3 so my wife and I could split the space in half!!

UPDATE: We've had this for almost two years now. Still using it and it still looks great and we use it everyday.

Blackberry Trackball /Ring Repair Replacement Fix Fixing for Rim Blackberry

My trackball on my 8100 pearl stopped scrolling up. I tried pulling it out and cleaning it, to no avail. I was a little suspicious whether this would fix the problem, but it did. It looks and fits just like OEM. It was pretty easy to install: just pry under the silver ring around the trackball, and the ring pops out. Then pry the smaller silver ring out, and then pop the trackball assembly out and pop the new one in. Not for those that are very technologically faint of heart -- but no harder than, say, adding memory to a computer. Google "blackberry trackball" and people have picture tutorials. I am just glad I did not have to get a whole new blackberry to fix the problem.

Apple iPhone 3G Textured Leather Horizontal

I've been using this case for two weeks now and I'm extremely happy with its functionality. The case is made from soft leather and has a clip and belt loops, so you have two options for carrying it. The cover closes magnetically. There's no need to fumble with velcro or snaps. When my iPhone is in the case, I can easily ensure that the sound is off with a quick glance. If I listen to music with earbuds, the iPhone fits in the case with the jack plugged in. There's an opening for the jack. The case holds the iPhone in place securely, but you can push it out with your finger using the slot at the bottom of the case. I would highly recommend this case!

electronic coin counter

After 2 dismal experiences with different "automated" coin sorters, I ordered this for my husband. No more buckets (literally) of change, no 9% fee, no frustrated hubby spending hours trying to accomodate the flimsy automated machines before returning them in disgust. Quick, easy...it works!

Classic Electric Pencil Sharpener,

I had originally purchased a cheap electric pencil sharpener and was frustrated with its lack of performance. I finally "bit the bullet" and spent the big bucks for one that received excellent reviews. I couldn't believe a simple pencil sharpener could be worth that much money, but I am soooo happy with it that I don't begrudge the cost any longer. It sharpens quickly, perfectly every time. It doesn't stop when sharpening is completed, but you can hear the sound change and know it's done. I highly recommend this product and would definitely purchase it again. I can't believe I got so excited over how well a pencil sharpener works! Few things today seem to have superior performance, so our expectations and standards are lower. Not so with the Panasonic pencil sharpener; it's a great product.

PURELL Portable Hand Sanitizer

PURELL Portable Size Hand Sanitizer, .05 oz. Size GOJ300560
Purell is wonderful back-up to cut down on the spread of germs. Having taught 1st grade, these are wonderful to have in the classroom for guests, children, other staff, and myself. (Okay, there are some rules...no using these on the playground to squirt at one another.)

In a business setting, their size is ideal for guests to grab and go. Greatest usage is between January and March...I stock up on extra then!

PRO Dual Cartridge Respirator

I have been renovating my home for years and never got a respirator for reasons that mostly revolve around laziness shrouded in a cloud of machismo. I occasionally donned the white masks you would get from the local hardware store, but quite frankly, they don't do a whole lot. This is my first respirator, and I have to thank the authors of the many reviews I read on this site that made me choose this one in particular.

I've used this under the house (fine dirt), while gardening (pollen), while sweeping (dust), and while using power tools to cut/mill wood (fine sawdust, smoke). I don't think any respirator will ever give you the experience of the freedom of not wearing any breathing apparatus of course, but this one is actually more comfortable than those white masks, and I breathe a lot better after my jobs are done. No more coughing and raspy throat for me!

Due to pollution, a bit of aging, and probably all those years of not wearing a respirator when I should have, I now have a mild asthmatic reaction to irritating airborne particles (I take Qvar everyday and have albuterol on standby). Don't let this be you! Get a respirator (I am of course, recommending this one) if you do any job/housework that results in you coughing or having to rinse your nose and/or mouth out afterwards. Your lungs will thank you.

Here are some downsides to wearing this (and probably all) respirators:
- Having facial hair will not allow a good seal around the muzzle (so shave, and beards, goatees, mustaches, mutton chops, etc. are out)
- It's a giant thing strapped to your face and head. I've unpleasantly bonked into things while working.
- The quick release clip on the back is great for getting in and out of this thing (I've read many reviews saying this is a key feature that many other respirators lack), but while it's very useful, the clip is kind of small and hard to operate (especially if you're wearing gloves).
- You'll look like a member of a hazmat team.

Here's some upside bullet points:
- Replacement cartridges are easy to find (something I think people don't always think about). I've seen them at OSH, Home Depot, and of course, Amazon.
- The quick release clip gets you in and out in easily
- I get sweaty and dirty, but this has been easy to clean
- Replacement cartridges easy to remove and install (don't know if this is normally an issue or not, but I thought I'd mention it)
- Did I already mention this will help save your lungs?
- You'll look like a member of a hazmat team.
